Georgia County Internship Program Grant Extension Overview

In May 2010, the Georgia County Internship Program (GCIP) received a $250,000 grant from the Georgia Department of Labor to provide opportunities for college students to intern in county government. To date, over 100 interns have been hired through this grant.  Recently, the Department of Labor has agreed to extend the grant through June 30, 2011. The following information provides an overview of the grant extension requirements:

Ø  All counties are invited to participate.

Ø  Funding will be provided on a first come, first serve basis.

Ø  All internship opportunities provided by counties must be approved by ACCG, advertised through the GCIP website, and be substantive in nature.

Ø  All participating counties must provide adequate workspace and supervision for their interns.

Ø  All participating counties must adhere to all grant requirements in the timeframe required in order to receiving funding.

Ø  Counties that have hired an intern in the past may hire that intern for a 2nd internship with the county but cannot hire the intern for a third internship.

Ø  All internship opportunities should be project oriented. Positions that are mostly administrative will be rejected.

Ø  Counties are allowed to hire multiple interns, but each position must be approved by ACCG and advertised through the GCIP website.

Ø  All interns hired through the program must be current college or technical students or recent graduates who will be pursuing graduate school within the next calendar year.

Ø  All interns hired through the program are paid $7.25 per hour up to 160 hours per internship. Counties can choose to supplement the hourly salary.

Ø  Counties must coordinate their hiring efforts with the Human Resources Department of their county to ensure that all hiring requirements are met.
