Marquel’s Pledge is a community initiative to raise the awareness of the dangers of celebratory gunfire in DeKalb County and throughout Georgia. DeKalb County created the initiative after 4-year-old Marquel Peters was struck and killed in church by a stray bullet believed to have been fired by a New Year’s Eve reveler. The county’s goal is to collect by the end 2011, 100,000 pledges from individuals who have committed to refrain from engaging in celebratory gunfire and encourage others to do the same.
