Gov. Deal Proposes Council on Criminal Justice Reform

Governor Nathan Deal has unveiled legislation to establish a Special Council on Criminal Justice Reform.  Through HB 265, this council would be charged with developing options to increase offender accountability, improve rehabilitation efforts and lower costs.  The council report would be due January 9, 2012.  Georgia currently has the 4th largest prison system in the nation, and the prison population has grown by 4.6 percent in the last year.  ACCG would track the work of this council and seek opportunities to provide input on the impact of the state’s criminal justice system on counties.
