Resources to Assist with Developing an ADA Transition Plan

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) recently requested a copy of each county’s Transition Plan for compliance with Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).  Each county’s Transition Plan was to have been completed by July 26, 1992, with the removal of all physical barriers identified therein by January 26, 1995. If a county did not develop a plan or cannot locate the original plan, a new plan can be written and submitted.

ACCG and GMA staff met with GDOT leadership on Thursday, November 10, 2011 to discuss this request.  GDOT must still have on record a copy of every county’s ADA Transition Plan, or its most recent version.  However, the plan does not have to be submitted by the deadline of November 30, 2011 originally identified in the letter sent to the county.

If the county does not have a copy of its plan to send prior to that date, GDOT requests the county to complete the “ADA Self-Evaluation” form.  On that letter, please indicate when the county expects to provide the plan to the department.  It is important for GDOT to have this form so that if the agency is audited by the federal government it can demonstrate it is still attempting to comply with the federal law.  If the county does have a plan, then send that in as soon as possible.
