County Name and Origin
| Chattooga County was created in 1838 from parts of Walker and Floyd counties and is named for its principal river. Summerville is the county seat, but the origin of its name is uncertain. Within Chattooga County territory was the home of the famous Cherokee Sequoyah who invented his nation's alphabet, thus advancing his people through use of a written language. |
