2020 Census Outreach

The COVID 19 outbreak has significantly impacted 2020 Census outreach and campaign efforts. It has further caused serious delays in census operations and deadlines. The Census Bureau delayed field operations from April 1 to June 1. The time frame to take the census in all forms (phone, online, by mail) has been extended from July 31 to October 31. As a result, Georgia is not only trailing behind the national average for self response rates, but has also fallen behind several neighboring states. County-by-county response rates can be found at  https://2020census.gov/en/response-rates.html

ACCG asks our members to increase their online outreach efforts through social media outlets, local press, through email signatures, and by incorporating census response reminders in public hearings and meetings. Both the U.S. Census Bureau and the State Complete Count Committee are encouraging local complete count committees to heavily promote census campaigns through social media and to motivate the public to take it online or by mail while everyone is at home.

Suggested Social Media Outreach Activities:

• Promote the free downloadable census coloring pages to parents and teachers available here and here

• Ask faith leaders to remind their congregations about taking the census during online services

• Tell residents about how to track census responses in their counties here

• Follow ACCG and the State’s social media accounts for census information and updates

• Download census posters to post on social media through census.georgia.gov

• Create your own census posters to post on social media through census.georgia.gov

• Post videos available on everyonecountsga.org through county social media outlets and public access channels

• Challenge residents to post selfies when they have completed their census forms with the county’s census hashtag i.e. #mycountycounts

• Distribute information about census scams to the public by tracking 2020 Census trust and safety team information

• Continue to reassure residents that the census is safe to take online
